Amerikanske CDC fastslår på deres offentlige sundhedshjemmesider at ME er en alvorlige kronisk sygdom der påvirker mange af kroppens systemer. Karidnalsymptomet er PEM – anstrengelsesudløst symptomforværring ved mental eller fysisk aktivitet pga. mitokondrie-dysfunktion hos patienten.
